Semantics research, semantic web, web .3.0

A current issue for museums and cultural collection management.

For a few years, the notions of semantic web and semantics research are everywhere. Everyone is dreaming about contextual research and an ideal full-text and large database.
For cultural collections management, the dream is becoming a reality.

The main goal of semantic web is an evolution of the web so that users are able to find, share and gather information easily without an intermediary.

This idea is not new, but has been around since the 1960s. Data and meta-data were combined in order to gather knowledge and accompany the user in his internet research. The end of a tedious work!

Such a stake requires a relevant semantic processing of information, languages created for data: RDF (Resource Description Framework), OWL ( Web Ontology Language), XML (eXtensible Markup Language).

At SKINsoft, we decided early on to subtly structure the description schemes, to think via links, to allow the documentation and recording of these links. At the heart of the SKINsoft applications database, items are represented in a very structured way, using domain ontology, the link between items are modeled within the databases or linked to external databases.

The result is an ideal structure for the optimization of semantic research on the internet, if the datas, links or records (meta-datas) are published.

It is important to remember that our solutions are full-web and thus the semantic web principle has guided the program development for SKINmuseum and SKINweb.

Of course, the SKINweb program of collections publishing takes into account the web 3.0 norms and can offer on the internet the whole or just a part of the collections on the basis of RDF, OWL and XML norms, which is a way to take full advantage of the advances of semantic web.

The software laboratory SKINsoft is mindful of its goal to innovate in the users' interest and fully participates in the semantic web adventure.

SKINsoft produces collections management and publication solutions for museums, foundations, private collections... art and history, natural sciences, contemporary art, archaeology...
